1. Choosing Gentle Hair Care Products is Key

The most important step for me after perming and dyeing my hair is using a gentle shampoo. I no longer use shampoos with harsh cleansing agents as they only make my hair drier. In the past, I thought the more foam a shampoo produced, the better it was. But eventually, I realized that excessive foam and chemicals could damage my hair. Now, I opt for shampoos and conditioners specifically designed for permed and dyed hair. These products are sulfate-free and much gentler, helping my hair retain moisture.

My Go-To Shampoo:

  • Moroccanoil Hydrating Shampoo & Conditioner
I absolutely love using this duo after every wash. It leaves my hair soft and moisturized, without feeling dry afterward. The argan oil in the formula deeply nourishes my hair, which is especially beneficial for my chemically treated strands.
  • Redken Extreme Shampoo
This shampoo is a godsend for damaged hair. Itโ€™s not only gentle but also helps repair my hair, restoring elasticity and shine, which is crucial after frequent dyeing and perming.

2. Deep Conditioning is an Essential Step

Permed and dyed hair often becomes dry, fragile, and lacks shine due to chemical treatments. Deep conditioning has become a key step in restoring hair health. I follow a strict deep conditioning routine every week to give my hair extra nourishment, helping it regain moisture and nutrients, and preventing further damage.

Why is Deep Conditioning So Important?

The chemical processes involved in perming and dyeing severely affect the hairโ€™s structure, causing a loss of keratin and moisture. This damage makes hair more brittle and prone to breakage and split ends. Deep conditioning products provide strong nourishment and repair, penetrating deep into the hair to restore damaged sections, lock in moisture, and bring back shine and elasticity.

My Go-To Deep Conditioning Products:

  • Olaplex No. 3 Hair Perfector
This repair mask is one of my favorite hair care products. Itโ€™s not just a regular hair mask; what makes Olaplex special is its ability to rebuild the internal structure of the hair. After each use, I can immediately feel that my hair is more resilient, and the split ends are significantly reduced. The effects are really noticeable, and I love using it to restore moisture and smoothness after dyeing. I use it once a week, and my hair no longer feels dry, but instead full of healthy shine. Itโ€™s truly a lifesaver for my hair, especially after a perm. It helps restore strength and shine.
  • Kerastase Nutritive Masquintense
This mask is another savior for me, especially after dyeing or perming my hair. Its nourishing effect is really powerful. After each use, I can feel that my hair becomes incredibly soft, and itโ€™s as smooth as silk to the touch. Especially in dry weather, this deep nourishment provides my hair with enough moisture and nutrients, effectively improving dryness and frizz. After every shampoo, I apply this mask and leave it on for about 10 minutes to give my hair the full repair it needs. This mask is perfect for restoring shine and softness, particularly for hair that has been treated with chemicals.

My Deep Conditioning Tips:

  • Heat the Mask: Sometimes, I like to slightly warm up my hair mask before applying it. This helps the product penetrate the hair more effectively. Especially in winter, when hair tends to get drier, I find that heating the mask slightly allows for more intensive absorption, providing deeper conditioning results.
  • Leave the Mask On Longer: If my hair is especially dry, I sometimes leave the mask on a little longer than usual, maybe 30 minutes to an hour. This allows the product to really penetrate the hair and repair the damaged parts, leaving my hair even more nourished and smooth.
  • Use Hair Oil: After deep conditioning, I always apply hair oil to lock in moisture and prevent my hair from losing its hydration. Hair oils not only help combat dryness and frizz but also add shine to my hair.

3. Minimizing Heat Styling

Iโ€™ll admit, I used to be obsessed with flat irons, curling wands, and blow dryers for convenience, but frequent heat styling can be very damaging for permed and dyed hair. Now, I try to reduce the use of hot tools, especially when my hair is already fragile. If I must use them, I set my blow dryer on a low-heat setting and try to let my hair dry naturally as much as possible.

My Tip:

  • Use cool or low heat on your blow dryer to minimize hair damage.
  • Whenever possible, allow your hair to dry naturally instead of using heat.

4. Protecting Against UV Rays and Environmental Pollution

UV rays and environmental pollutants can accelerate the aging and damage of hair, so whenever I go out, I make sure to apply a protective hair spray that offers sun protection, especially during sunny days. This not only protects the color of my hair but also prevents it from drying out and becoming damaged.

My Favorite Sun Protection Hair Spray:

  • Aveda Sun Care Protective Hair Veil
This spray not only protects against UV rays but also keeps my hair feeling moisturized without feeling greasy. I apply it every time I’m exposed to strong sunlight to protect my hair from harmful UV rays.

5. Regular Trims to Maintain Hair Health

Permed and dyed hair tends to develop split ends, so I make it a point to trim my hair every 6-8 weeks, especially the ends. Regular trims not only help remove damaged hair but also maintain overall hair health, preventing split ends from spreading.

6. Maintaining a Balanced Diet to Nourish Your Hair

While external care is important, healthy eating is also key. I make sure to consume plenty of vitamins, minerals, and protein, as these nutrients are essential for hair growth and repair. I especially focus on foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin A, and vitamin E, which help keep my hair shiny and healthy.

Nourish hair after perming and coloring, restoring a healthy, radiant shine.

Hair that has been permed or dyed requires more attention and care, but with the right products and proper care techniques, you can restore its health and shine. By using gentle shampoos, deep conditioning regularly, reducing heat styling, protecting against UV rays and pollution, and maintaining a healthy diet, even permed and dyed hair can remain smooth, shiny, and healthy. These methods have worked wonders for me, and Iโ€™m confident you’ll see improvements in your hair too. I hope my hair care tips are helpful, and I wish you gorgeous, healthy hair, whether itโ€™s permed or dyed!
